Guinea, Ivory Coast Leaders Commit to Deepening Bilateral Cooperation

Guinea’s President Mamady Doumbouya and Côte d’Ivoire’s President Alassane Ouattara have agreed to strengthen cooperation between their countries, particularly in security, trade and political affairs.

The agreement was reached during talks in Abidjan on Sunday, following Doumbouya’s arrival in the Ivorian capital on Friday.

Discussions focused heavily on regional security challenges, with Doumbouya calling for stronger intelligence-sharing mechanisms between Guinea and Côte d’Ivoire to tackle cross-border crime and terrorism.

“Like you, I am convinced that there can be no development without peace and stability,” Doumbouya said.

The Guinean leader reaffirmed his country’s willingness to work closely with Côte d’Ivoire on intelligence cooperation and coordinated efforts against criminal networks operating across their borders.

According to a statement from Ouattara’s office, Doumbouya also urged both countries to intensify efforts to combat illegal gold mining, describing the issue as strategically important.

Illegal mining and undeclared gold production have remained major concerns across Africa. A 2024 report estimated that as much as 40 per cent of the continent’s gold production goes undeclared, resulting in significant lost revenue.

The latest discussions are expected to deepen ties between Guinea and Côte d’Ivoire while supporting greater regional stability, security and economic cooperation.
