Sexy Steel, Davido Give Accounts of How ‘Dami Duro’ Beat Came About

Nigerian singer Sexy Steel has claimed that he owned the original beat used for Davido’s breakout song, “Dami Duro.”

Sexy Steel made the claim in a video, reigniting discussion about the origins of the instrumental that helped launch Davido into mainstream Nigerian music.

Davido, however, acknowledged during an interview featured in an Afrobeat documentary that the foundation of the beat was initially created for Sexy Steel.

According to Davido, he produced the original instrumental in his Lagos studio in 2011 with Sexy Steel in mind. As work on the track progressed, producer Shizzy became involved and contributed keys and additional production.

Davido said he later recognised the potential of the instrumental and decided to use it for his own recording.

The beat subsequently became the foundation for “Dami Duro,” one of the songs that established Davido as a major figure in the Nigerian music industry.

While Sexy Steel has raised questions about the ownership and origins of the instrumental, Davido’s account acknowledges that the beat was initially developed for Sexy Steel before being adapted for his own song.

The development provides additional context to the history of “Dami Duro,” which went on to become an important early Afrobeats hit.
