Record label took N8m out of N10m compensation I got after Burna Boy assaulted me – Mr 2Kay

Nigerian singer Abiye Jumbo, popularly known as Mr 2Kay, has alleged that his former record label gave him only N2 million from the N10 million compensation he received from Eko Hotel and Suites after an attack in 2017.

The singer made the disclosure during a recent interview with Yanga FM Lagos, explaining that the handling of the money contributed to his decision to leave the label.

Mr 2Kay said the hotel management paid him N10 million following an incident in which he was assaulted and robbed at gunpoint in his hotel room.

He alleged that the attack was linked to fellow musician Burna Boy, an allegation that led to police investigations and subsequent court proceedings.

According to Mr 2Kay, his former label handed him just N2 million out of the compensation, leaving him dissatisfied with how the matter was handled.

The incident occurred on October 22, 2017, after the singer performed at the Buckwyld ‘n’ Breathless concert at Eko Hotel and Suites in Lagos.

Reports indicated that armed men posing as room service personnel attacked him, tied him up and robbed him in his hotel room.

The Lagos State Police Command arrested four suspects, including Burna Boy’s road manager, Joel Kantiok, in connection with the incident.

Burna Boy was declared wanted during the investigation before later surrendering to the police. He was arraigned at the Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in December 2017 on charges relating to conspiracy and accessory to armed robbery and was subsequently granted bail.

The allegations surrounding the incident became the subject of legal proceedings. Mr 2Kay later withdrew the case after Burna Boy tendered an apology.

In August 2021, a viral video showed the two musicians together at a Lagos nightclub, suggesting that their longstanding disagreement had been resolved.

Speaking about his present career, Mr 2Kay revealed that he is now a music executive and described the business as lucrative.

His latest disclosure has revived interest in the compensation dispute and the events that strained his relationship with his former record label.

The singer’s account also highlights the financial disagreements that can emerge between artistes and their management over compensation received after difficult experiences.
