The Kano State Police Command has arrested a 25-year-old suspected thug, Umar Usman, popularly known as ‘Ta’ambo’, over alleged involvement in thuggery, mobile phone robberies and attacks on security personnel in Rimin Kebe and its environs.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Abdullahi Kiyawa, disclosed this in a statement issued on Thursday, saying the suspect had been on the command’s wanted list over alleged involvement in criminal activities in the area.
“The suspect was arrested at about 8.40pm on Thursday by surveillance operatives attached to Zango Police Division following weeks of discreet monitoring and intelligence gathering,” Kiyawa said.
According to the statement, Usman, a resident of Rimin Kebe, allegedly coordinated thuggery activities and phone snatching in Rimin Kebe, Ramin Research Area and along Galula Hospital.
“His alleged activities included attacking and intimidating residents, snatching mobile phones and other valuables, as well as causing injuries to security personnel in the area.
“The suspect, a notorious ‘Dandaba’, has been terrorising residents of Rimin Kebe, Ramin Research Area and along Galula Hospital, where he allegedly coordinated thuggery activities and mobile phone robberies, causing fear and disrupting public peace in the areas,” the statement said.
The command said his arrest followed several complaints and intelligence reports linking him to the offences, adding that community-based information contributed to the operation.
It added that residents and community leaders in the affected areas had described the arrest as a major breakthrough, expressing hope that it would end the reported thuggery activities.
The statement said the suspect was in police custody undergoing investigation, while efforts were ongoing to arrest other members of his alleged gang and recover stolen property and weapons.
“Upon completion of investigation, he will be charged to court,” the police said.
The Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Bakori, commended the officers of Zango Police Division for their professionalism and urged residents to continue providing credible information to security agencies.
The command also appealed to members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious persons or activities to the nearest police station or through its emergency lines.
