Kano State High Court has sentenced a man, Abdulaziz Umar, to death by hanging for killing Mubarak Salisu during a robbery incident involving a Samsung phone in Kano.

The trial judge, Justice Zuwaira Yusuf in her judgment on Monday held that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt, adding that she found the defendant guilty on all the counts and convicted him as charged.

The incident occurred on October 1, 2020 at about 6:00pm at Race Course, Badawa area of Kano when the victim was attacked and robbed of his Samsung handset valued at N100,000.

Umar was charged with several accomplices namely Muyi, Umar Sarki, Diga, Ashosho, and Taduke who are currently at large.

Aisha Salisu, a Deputy Director of Public Prosecution in the Kano State Ministry of Justice, who led the prosecution during the trial, called four witnesses whose testimonies established the culpability of the defendant while the defence counsel, Ya’u Abdullahi Umar, called only the convict to testify in his defence.

“The defendant and his accomplices conspired to rob the victim, carried out the robbery using a knife and caused his death by stabbing him, knowing that such action could result in fatal consequences,” the charges said.

The court found him (Abdul Aziz Umar) guilty of criminal conspiracy, armed robbery, culpable homicide punishable with death and brigandage under relevant provisions of the Penal Code Law of Kano State.

Justice Yusuf then sentenced Abdulaziz Umar to death by hanging in accordance with the law.

The Africa Center for Good Governance and Corruption Free Communities, a civic group, is worried that the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation has turned a civil case against human rights lawyer Barrister Victor Giwa and two other people into a criminal case.

The civic group brought up the issue and asked Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, and Mr. Rotimi Oyedepo, the Director of Public Prosecution in the Ministry of Justice, to look into the case.

The CSO’s convener, Temitope Olubunmi Joseph, said that the case started out as a civil matter but was made a criminal matter by the former AGF, Abubakar Malami, SAN.

The civic group was worried that the charge could be a witch hunt and called for a full investigation to find out the truth.

“This is supposed to be a civil matter. The question we should ask is, when did it become a criminal matter?” We know that the Honorable AGF Fagbemi and the DPP, Oyedepo, haven’t thought about the issue in a serious way yet.

“We are using this medium to ask them to look into this matter again and ask for a new investigation.

“The last administration in the ministry, led by Malami, used his office to scare and harass Giwa and his client, Cecil Osakwe, over a property owned by Osakwe at No. 1, Me Long Close, Maitama, Abuja.”

The civil society group said, “We ask the AGF to look into the matter again and order a new investigation so that an innocent person does not have to pay for it.”

According to reports, Justice Samira Bature of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court had issued an arrest warrant for Giwa and a police officer named Edith Erhunmuuse. The Office of the Attorney General of the Federation charged them with nine counts under the case number FCT/HC/CR/222/2023. They were to be arraigned with another defendant, Cecil Osakwe.

The charge said that the defendants had done something illegal by allegedly evicting people by force and damaging property worth N300 million.

The civil society group, on the other hand, pointed out that a court ordered the eviction that the defendants were charged with.

The civic group said, “The eviction could not have happened without the order of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory,” and they criticized the criminal prosecution.

Gobri Yusuf, a 15-year-old kid, was arrested by the Kwara State Police command on suspicion of killing Akanbi, his guardian, who had adopted and reared him in the state capital of Ilorin.

After his first attempt at poisoning failed, the suspect is said to have attacked his protector.

During a news conference on Friday at the command’s headquarters in Ilorin, the state’s Commissioner of Police, Adekimi Ojo, clarified that the suspect was captured after the police received a distress complaint about finding Akanbi in a pool of blood at her home.

“Preliminary findings from the investigation revealed that the suspect who lived with the deceased, allegedly carried out the attack while the victim was bathing,” stated the Commissioner of Police.

According to the results, he continued, the suspect, who lived with the dead, reportedly hid behind a door and attacked her while she was taking a bath with household objects.

According to the Ojo, items found on the suspect included kitchen knives, a frying pan, a weighing scale, and a kitchen turning stick (spatula).

He clarified that during questioning, the suspect admitted to the murder, claiming that it was motivated by animosity for the deceased.

According to the Commissioner, the suspect changed his clothes after allegedly committed the crime and then left the house pretending to do an errand.

He added that after the boy got in touch with the deceased’s spouse, he found her corpse.

While the suspect is still in police custody, the commissioner clarified that an investigation is still underway.

A well-known physician from Anambra, Mr. Chidozie Nwangwu, commonly known as Akwa Okuko, was given a two-year prison sentence.

Agunechemba Security organization agents detained Nwangwu in February 2025 on charges that he had assisted in kidnapping and money rituals, among other things.

The indigenous physician was subsequently taken into custody together with two of his coworkers, Mr. Okocha, also known as Onyeze Jesus, and Mr. Ekene, popularly known as Eke Hit.

Nwangwu entered a guilty plea to the accusations against him, and Justice Jude Obiorah read his judgment on Friday. The three have been on trial while being held under remand in the custody of Agunechemba Security outfit.

After reading the verdict, Justice Obiorah disclosed that the indigenous physician had previously negotiated a plea agreement with the state government and admitted guilt to the charges against him.

Due to the suspect’s demonstrated reasonable remorse, the judge sentenced him to two years in jail on counts three, four, five, six, seven, and eight.

Nevertheless, he dismissed counts one, two, and three of the accusations against him. According to him, Nwangwu’s conviction was supported by the Anambra Homeland Law as well as the criminal law.

“Anyone who claims to have the ability to heal or make someone wealthy through certain magical means, like Okeite, is subject to two years in prison,” he declared.

“Anyone in the state who engages in ezenwanyi or okeite faces a six-year prison sentence.”

He found the local doctors guilty on counts three, four, and eight, and he was given a concurrent two-year prison sentence.

Justice Obiorah further punished the accused N20 million on counts one, five, and eight.

He stated, “The total fine is N60 million, but due to the accused’s remorse, the fine is now waived because the state does not require such money in such a situation.”

Despite his attorney’s request for him to spend in the Agunechemba facility, he will serve the remaining 11 months of his sentence at Awka Correctional Center because he has already spent 13 months in detention. This is due to the Agunechemba facility’s non-correctional status.

But in order to atone for his transgressions, the court issued directives that he must follow. The judge declared that the defendant’s shrine in Oba would be demolished, that he would no longer practice Okeite after his release, and that he would have to publicly condemn it. The statement will be captured on camera.

The judge declared, “He will be appointed ambassador of youth reorientation and will be required to make public statements warning young people against pursuing wealth through supernatural means.”

Shortly after their arraignment on a 12-count criminal charge, Senior Advocate of Nigeria Mike Ozekhome and his co-defendant Ponfa Useni were granted bail of ₦10 million apiece by the Federal Capital Territory’s High Court in Maitama on Friday.

The charge was brought by the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation regarding the alleged forgery of documents, such as an irrevocable power of attorney and an international passport, that were allegedly used to assert a claim to a London property that the late Jeremiah Useni had illegally acquired.

According to reports, the defendants entered not guilty pleas to every allegation.

Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN), the prosecuting attorney, did not object to the bail requests made by F.R. Onoja (SAN) for Useni and Tayo Oyetibo (SAN) for Ozekhome.

In a succinct decision, Justice Chizoba Oji allowed the defendants to post N10 million bail each, provided they each had a surety who owned property in the Federal Capital Territory.

Additionally, she mandated that the defendants provide the court their foreign passports.

The judge decided that because the proceedings took place on a Friday, the defendants might go back home if they couldn’t fulfill their bail requirements right away.

She did, however, give them instructions to return to court on Monday to complete the requirements; if they didn’t, they would be placed under detention in jail.

The Lagos State Police Command has revealed the rationale behind the temporary suspension of the several rape accusations against well-known preacher Chris Okafor.

According to reports, Olohundare Jimoh, the Commissioner of Police, had already directed an inquiry into the accusations made against Okafor.

He ordered the troubled clergyman to report to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Panti and subsequently revealed that the case had been forwarded to Sylvester Alabi, the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 2, for additional action.

However, the command’s spokesman, Abimbola Adebisi, gave an update on the situation and stated that the investigation was stopped because the police-invited complainants did not show up.

Additionally, she stated that while the Zone 2 Command was managing the case under the direction of Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, the command could not conduct a concurrent investigation.

“There has not been further investigation from the command,” she said.

He was invited, but I’m not sure if you know that. We found out that he had comparable requests, which are still being looked into, when they came around. So we were told to stop by the CP. We will reopen ours once theirs in Zone 2 is finished.

Additionally, none of the complainants we have been contacting have shown up. As of right now, we are not moving forward. We’re not pressuring the complainants any more. All we do is wait. After Zone 2 is finished, we’ll wait to see what happens. And the next course of action will be known to us. On his own initiative, he was freed to go to Zone 2 for additional inquiry.
