Veteran Yoruba actor, filmmaker and producer Sunny Alli has dismissed popular beliefs in money rituals, saying many stories about witchcraft in Nollywood are not realistic and are not backed up with evidence.

The actor, best known for his roles in Omo Ghetto, Lagos Girls (Omoge Eko), Omo Olè and Okan In an interview on YouTube programme Oyinmomo, Soso opened up about everything from scriptwriting to superstition and the kind of stories he loves to tell.

Alli says he purposely leaves out scenes where witches gather in his scripts, as they’re based on unsubstantiated allegations.
“There are some things that will never appear in my scripts. Like meetings of witches. I do not believe they are true because nobody has proved they exist. ‘People say that witches meet up in red clothes but who has really been there to see it?’ he said.

The veteran actor wondered how such scenes became a norm in Nigerian movies and said nobody has been able to provide convincing evidence on how witches operate.

“Who wrote everything down about witches? What are they actually like? People relate to accidents or real life experiences so I can write about them. “Those are stories that fit,” he added.

Alli refuted the common belief that wealth could be acquired by ritual means, saying such claims did not stand up to logical scrutiny.

“I have always said I don’t believe in money rituals. They say a demon gives them the money. I ask them, does the demon have a printing machine? “Is it the money of the Central Bank of Nigeria or the money of a Bureau de Change?” he asked.

Whenever I asked these questions, the believers in the belief would usually change their explanations, he said.

“The money comes through contracts the person never bid for, and when they couldn’t answer, they came up with another story. I like scripts that have some basis in reality. I just don’t believe in money rituals,” said Alli.

The actor also talked about his history of betting on football games, saying he has quit gambling.

I used to bet on football but I don’t now. I believe that God does not support gambling, and I thank Him that it is now behind me,” he said.

Alli is a founding member of the Odunfa Caucus and is still one of the respected men in the Yoruba movie industry. He has earned many accolades over the years for his emotional performances and his contributions as an actor, producer and director.

The Yoruba movie industry is in mourning following reports that actor and comedian, Adeshina Okiki Oshin, popularly known as Janmole, has died.

It was gathered that the news of his death broke on June 1 when an Ibadan based radio station announced the development on social media.

In a Facebook post, the station described the actor as a multi-faceted entertainer whose contributions to the Yoruba movie industry would be remembered.

“Sad news hits the Yoruba movie industry as multi-talented actor, filmmaker and comedian, Adeshina Okiki Oshin, aka Janmole is reported to have died,” the post read.

The station also extended its condolences to his family, friends, the people of Okeho and members of the Nollywood community.

As of the time of filing this report, Janmole’s cause of death has not been officially confirmed.

His death was a shock to many of his admirers especially as he had been in a serious accident over a year ago.

The recovery had generated hope from fans and colleagues who feared for his life at the time.

His reported death follows the deaths of Patrick Okoye and veteran Yoruba actor Fesogboye Oyewole, adding to the sense of loss in the industry.

Nollywood, the Nigerian movie industry, has been thrown into mourning following the death of popular actor, Alex Ekubo.

Ekubo died Monday night at Evercare Hospital, Lekki, Lagos after a battle with liver cancer, it was learnt. He was forty.

The death was confirmed by Vanguard on Tuesday, the former Big Brother Naija star and Director of Communication of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, Boma Akpore, saying the actor’s body had been moved to Ebony Vaults in Ikoyi.

Another colleague, Godwin Nnadiekwe, mourned the actor on Instagram.

“I’m struggling to find the words,” he wrote. This news has really broken me. “Nollywood has lost a rare soul and I am lost for words because this wasn’t the plan Alex Ekub.”

Veteran director Lancelot Imasuen, who gave Ekubo his first movie role, described the death as “devastating and unbelievable.”

“That’s how I gave him his first role in a movie that took him into Nollywood,” Imasuen said.

News of the death was met with a flood of tributes from colleagues, celebrities and fans.

Funke Akindele reminisced about their bond and how Ekubo called her “Ore mi” with fondness.

Other celebrities such as Bolanle Ninalowo, Peter Okoye, Richard Mofe-Damijo, Omoni Oboli, Mo Abudu, Kate Henshaw, Yvonne Jegede, Kunle Remi and Ruth Kadiri also mourned the late actor.

Human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore, described Ekubo as a “rare talent,” while broadcaster Oseni Rufai wrote, “Rest well Alex.
