Dele Momodu, a former presidential candidate and publisher of Ovation Magazine, expressed shock at the overwhelming support President Bola Tinubu is receiving from state governors and warned that if the President wins a second term in 2027, Nigeria could descend into dictatorship.

In an interview with News Central, Momodu expressed his disapproval of the increasing number of governors who were elected on opposition platforms defecting to the ruling All Progressives Congress.

According to reports, a number of governors who were first elected by opposition parties have recently sided with the APC.

Ahmadu Fintiri, the governor of Adamawa State, is reportedly involved in one of the most recent incidents, which has increased conjecture on the opposition’s power in advance of 2027.

Momodu, a leader of the African Democratic Congress, responded to the trend by accusing the governors of putting political survival ahead of democratic ideals.

He declared, “The governors are fighting to be the biggest thug for Tinubu in order to ensure that he wins a second term.”

Momodu claimed that the governors’ abrupt allegiance to the president perplexed him.

“What jazz they’ve used on them is unknown to me. He questioned, “What will a man do when he has power for a second term and has no need for anybody if he can capture the bodies and souls of Nigerians in this way during his first term?”

He claims that a second term for Tinubu may erode institutional checks and balances, making governors more susceptible.

The media entrepreneur cautioned that if the president is re-elected, the governors who are now backing him might come to regret their choices.

A full-fledged dictatorship will then take hold, and all of the governors will be at his mercy. If he is elected to a second term, they would repent it because they will be completely subservient to him, Momodu stated.

According to reports, Momodu’s comments coincide with escalating political unrest leading up to the general elections in 2027, as Nigeria’s political landscape continues to be reshaped by alignments and realignments.
