A former spokesman of the Labour Party, LP, presidential campaign team in the 2023 presidential election, Kenneth Okonkwo has stated that there is anarchy in the opposition party.

The actor-tuned politician, who spoke during an interview on Channels TV, said the party is currently functioning without leaders, rubbishing the authority of the National Chairman, Julius Abure.

According to report stakeholders of the party, including the Abia State Governor, Alex Otti had sacked Abure following some contending issues within the party.

But the Federal High Court in Abuja on October 8, 2024, returned him as the party’s leader.

According to the court, the 2024 Labour Party national convention held in Nnewi, which re-elected Abure was valid.

The court ruled that the convention was in line with all laid down laws in Nigeria, triggering more crisis within the party.

The unending leadership crisis forced Okonkwo to resign from the party as announced on Tuesday.

Giving reasons for his decision, the Nollywood actor told Channels TV that “anarchy has arrived at the Labour Party. Like I always say, anarchy is the absence of authority or non-recognition of authority.

“Currently in the Labour Party, there is no authority that is governing the party. I don’t think I have read anywhere that courts say Abure is the authentic chairman of LP.

“All the courts they went to.. because they knew that there was no convention so they always avoided the issue of convention. They will come to court and say ‘court, we need to have our agents in Ondo, you have to give us power. Give us an order to field our agents under the leadership of Abure’.

“That is the tricking and cunning way they have been going about the issue of leadership in the Labour Party.”
