43LABOUR PARTY RELEASES TIMETABLE, FEES FOR 2027 PRIMARY ELECTIONS
The Labour Party Nigeria has officially unveiled its timetable and schedule of activities for the conduct of its 2026 primary elections ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a press release issued on May 3, 2026, and signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ken Eluma Asogwa, the party stated that the schedule aligns with the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), the Electoral Act 2026, and the guidelines set by the Independent National Electoral Commission.
According to the timetable, the sale of nomination forms for all elective positions will commence on May 6 and end on May 16, 2026. Submission of completed forms is scheduled for May 17 to May 18.
Screening of aspirants will take place in phases, with House of Assembly and governorship aspirants slated for May 20, while National Assembly and presidential aspirants will be screened on May 22. The publication of screening results is expected on May 23.
The party also fixed May 24 and May 25 for appeals and petitions for different categories, while the final list of cleared aspirants will be released on May 26.
Primary elections for House of Assembly and governorship positions are scheduled for May 27, while those for National Assembly and presidential positions will hold on May 29, 2026.
The party further announced the fees for nomination forms across various offices. Aspirants for State House of Assembly are to pay a total of ₦3 million, while House of Representatives forms cost ₦5 million. Senate aspirants will pay ₦10 million, governorship aspirants ₦25 million, and presidential aspirants ₦50 million.
However, the party disclosed that the governor of Abia State, Alex Otti, will be presented with the governorship nomination form free of charge.
In line with its commitment to inclusivity, the Labour Party announced concessions for women, youths aged 25 to 30, and persons living with disabilities. These categories of aspirants are only required to pay for the Expression of Interest forms across all positions.
The party also urged prospective aspirants who are yet to register as members to take advantage of its ongoing e-registration exercise. The registration window, which opened on May 3, will close at midnight on May 4, 2026, ahead of the submission of its membership register to INEC in compliance with the Electoral Act.
The announcement marks a significant step in the party’s preparation for the 2027 general elections, setting the stage for what is expected to be a competitive primary process.

A staff member of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, MMIA, Lagos, Frank Omorojie, has been lauded for returning a lost purse with cash and important travel documents to its owner at the departure hall of Terminal 2.

Omorojie found the misplaced item on Wednesday at the Rwanda Air check-in area.

Inside the purse were $1,700, a Nigerian and British passport, and a credit card.

An airport source said the discovery immediately raised concerns about tracing the owner, but Omorojie handed the item over to Aviation Security, AVSEC, personnel without hesitation.

The recovered items were duly recorded, per standard airport procedures, and turned over to the Customer Service unit, which promptly issued a public announcement to try to find the owner.

Within a short time a Nigerian passenger who was due to fly to Kigali, Rwanda and who had feared the items were lost forever was reunited with all her belongings intact.

Airport officials said the incident was a clear example of professionalism and integrity, and said such actions reinforced the public’s confidence in airport operations and the conduct of airport workers.

Omorojie said his decision was guided by simple principles of honesty, speaking briefly.

“I just did what was right,” he replied.

His action has since been lauded by colleagues and airport authorities, who described it as a commendable example of responsibility and ethical conduct in public service.

Adewole Adebayo, the Social Democratic Party’s candidate for president in 2023, is worried about the honesty of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan, if it turns out that an alleged 𝕏 account linked to him is really his.

Adebayo talked about the account’s problems on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics. He said that the problems go beyond technical issues and have to do with people’s trust in the electoral body.

The former presidential candidate said that if the account can be linked to the INEC chairman, it could raise serious questions, even though he denies it.

Adebayo said, “If it can be traced back to him and he denies it, then it raises questions about integrity.”

He went on to say that the issue was important because people need to trust the electoral umpire for it to be credible.

Adebayo said that even though digital content can be changed, there are ways to check who owns an online account.

He said, “It is well known that in the digital space, you could manipulate anything, but there is forensic tracing of identity.”

He said that the issue could be settled through the courts or the legislature.

He went on to say, “Either someone will go to court to challenge his qualification on the grounds of partisanship and present evidence, or the National Assembly will look into it, possibly through its INEC committees.”

The SDP leader, on the other hand, made it clear that even if it could be proven that the account belonged to Amupitan, it would not automatically disqualify him from being INEC chairman.

He said that the law only says that the person can’t be a member of a political party when they are appointed.

Adebayo also said, “The requirement is that you should not be a member of any political party when you are appointed.” It doesn’t mean you couldn’t have been a member before or that you didn’t vote.

“Someone who voted in 2023 could still be the INEC chairman in 2025.”

Adebayo said that the main point is still honesty and the public’s trust in the election process.

He went on to say, “If you are already lying to the public about something as simple as this, and we are supposed to trust you to decide the outcomes of elections, then it becomes a matter of integrity.”

Following reports that a number of senior officials paid over ₦5 million each to advance to the position of Assistant Commissioner of Police under former Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, new accusations of corruption within the Nigerian Police Force have surfaced.

The accusations, according to Sahara Reporters, are based on records that were acquired from the Abuja Force Headquarters.

According to reports, an internal police wireless message dated February 23, 2026, verified the contentious promotions.

According to the statement, which cited SH.4700/FS/FHQ/ABJ/T.3/40, the promotions were authorized after receiving correspondence from the Police Service Commission.

The message said, “Promotion Senior Officers x CSP to ACP x Ref Polscom Letnos. PSC/Prom/1/1096/II dated 31/07/2025 and PSC/Prom/1/1096/II dated 05/08/2025 x Ingenpol has graciously approved the release of promotion of the under-listed CSPs to substantive rank of ACP x with effect from the date indicated against their names.”

Authorities were also asked to recognize the promotions in the directive, which was distributed to numerous police commands and agencies throughout the nation.

The document said, “Please convey Ingenpol’s heartfelt congratulations to the affected senior officers x Gazette and Force Order publications to follow.”

The promotion of eight officials to Assistant Commissioner of Police from Chief Superintendent of Police was announced.

Joash Amupitan, the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has called on the electoral body’s employees to maintain the highest standards of professionalism, transparency, and integrity in the performance of their duties as plans for the 2027 general elections start to take shape.
According to a statement from the INEC Media Team, headed by Victoria Eta-Messi, Amupitan took the lead on Friday when visiting the Commission’s state office in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, where he spoke with employees and examined a few voter registration locations in Ikot Ekpene.

In order to assess important issues of electoral administration as part of early preparations for the 2027 polls, the Commission held a technical workshop in Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area at the same time as the visit.

During the visit, the INEC chairman spoke to the staff, reminding them that Nigerians have high expectations for the Commission’s ability to conduct credible elections.

“Nigerians anticipate credible, free, and fair elections from the Commission,” Amupitan stated. “Every employee is expected to uphold professionalism, transparency, and integrity at all times.”

He clarified that in order to improve the electoral process before the next general election, the Commission has already started internal investigations and technical engagements.

“The future is something you create if you want to predict it,” he stated. “We are starting to develop what the 2027 election should look like with this retreat.”

Amupitan also emphasized the significance of preserving the voter register’s integrity, pointing out that the current voter revalidation process was created to get rid of duplicate registrations and remove the names of people who have passed away from the database.

In order to increase the accuracy of population data and guarantee that only eligible citizens are registered to vote, he said the Commission would keep working with pertinent national data agencies, such as the National Identity Management Commission and the National Population Commission.

The chairman of INEC further reassured employees that the Commission was still dedicated to enhancing their well-being and professional advancement.

He reminded them that the commitment and expertise of the Commission’s staff are crucial to the legitimacy of elections and public trust in Nigeria’s democracy.

Obo Effanga, the resident electoral commissioner for Akwa Ibom State, said earlier in his welcoming speech that the chairman’s visit offered a chance to interact directly with employees in charge of carrying out the Commission’s duty in the state.

Effanga pointed out that even though the Commission was in Ikot Ekpene for a technical workshop, the visit to the state office in Uyo gave the INEC chairman the opportunity to speak with staff members and see directly what the state’s employees were doing.
