Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has declared that he is not afraid of the outcome of the ongoing political crisis in the state.

Fubara made this statement on Monday during the inauguration of residential quarters for Government House staff in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.

The governor stated that the worst that could happen to him would be leaving office, adding that each time his administration attempts to achieve stability, obstacles arise, setting the state back to square one.

He commended the people of Rivers State for standing by his administration despite the political turbulence.

“No matter how much we have been deceived in this state, we have now reached a point where the people have decided to take their destiny into their own hands.

“Inasmuch as I do not support violence, when the time comes to make a decision, I will lead the charge.

“I’m not scared of anything; the worst that can happen is for me to leave office. Am I leaving the earth? Will it stop me from existing? I’m not bothered about that. The right thing must be done and said when the opportunity is given to us,” Fubara said.

According to report for over two years, Rivers State has been embroiled in political turmoil following the rift between Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, who is now the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT.

The crisis has led to a division in the Rivers State House of Assembly, which is now split into two factions.

Last Friday, the Supreme Court upheld a Federal High Court ruling barring the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, and the Accountant-General of the Federation from releasing statutory monthly allocations to Rivers State.

Additionally, the apex court ordered the Martins Amaewhule-led faction of the Rivers State House of Assembly and other elected members to resume sitting immediately.

The Supreme Court also nullified the local government elections held in Rivers State on 5th October 2024, declaring them invalid, null, and void.

These rulings have been widely seen as a political advantage for the Wike-led faction in the ongoing crisis.

The CEO of South Korea’s Jeju Air, Kim E-bae, has been banned from leaving the country following a fatal plane crash that killed 179 people, South Korean police confirmed on Thursday.

The ban was imposed as part of an ongoing investigation into the country’s deadliest aviation incident.

The crash occurred last Sunday, December 28, 2024 when Jeju Air Flight 2216, a Boeing 737-800, crashed while attempting to land at Muan Airport, located in South Jeolla Province. The plane, which was en route from Thailand to South Korea, hit a barrier before bursting into flames.

“The investigation team imposed a travel ban on two individuals, including Jeju Air CEO Kim E-bae,” police in South Jeolla Province stated.

The disaster, which shocked the nation, marked South Korea’s deadliest aviation accident in years. It raised widespread concerns about air travel safety, prompting South Korea’s acting president, Choi Sang-mok, to order an emergency safety inspection of the country’s airline operations.

“We must ensure the safety of all air travel and address the concerns raised by this devastating incident,” President Choi said during a press briefing on Monday.

The crash also led to a surge in flight cancellations as passengers remained wary of flying, further intensifying scrutiny on Jeju Air and the state of the country’s aviation industry
