A staff member of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, MMIA, Lagos, Frank Omorojie, has been lauded for returning a lost purse with cash and important travel documents to its owner at the departure hall of Terminal 2.

Omorojie found the misplaced item on Wednesday at the Rwanda Air check-in area.

Inside the purse were $1,700, a Nigerian and British passport, and a credit card.

An airport source said the discovery immediately raised concerns about tracing the owner, but Omorojie handed the item over to Aviation Security, AVSEC, personnel without hesitation.

The recovered items were duly recorded, per standard airport procedures, and turned over to the Customer Service unit, which promptly issued a public announcement to try to find the owner.

Within a short time a Nigerian passenger who was due to fly to Kigali, Rwanda and who had feared the items were lost forever was reunited with all her belongings intact.

Airport officials said the incident was a clear example of professionalism and integrity, and said such actions reinforced the public’s confidence in airport operations and the conduct of airport workers.

Omorojie said his decision was guided by simple principles of honesty, speaking briefly.

“I just did what was right,” he replied.

His action has since been lauded by colleagues and airport authorities, who described it as a commendable example of responsibility and ethical conduct in public service.
