The Delta State Commissioner of Police, Olufemi Abaniwonda, has ordered a thorough investigation into the death of 24-year-old upcoming artist, Paul Obukohwo.

The directive was announced on Sunday in a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, who urged the deceased’s family to visit the police headquarters to initiate the probe.

Obukohwo was said to have been tortured to death while in the custody of operatives of the Rapid Response Squad.

Expressing condolences to the bereaved family, Abaniwonda assured them that officers found culpable after the probe would face the full weight of the law.

According to the police statement, the incident occurred on March 26, 2025, at about 3:45 p.m. when RRS operatives raided a known black spot along Okpanam Road.

During the operation, they arrested a suspect, Prosper Odili, 24, who was allegedly wearing military camouflage, while others fled the scene.

The statement added, “The deceased who obstructed the police from arresting his brother and damaged the patrol vehicle in the process, was later arrested.

“While Paul Obukohwo was in custody, he fell sick and was taken to Police Hospital Asaba where he was diagnosed with hypoglycaemia (low sugar).

“Due to the severity of his condition, he was referred to Asaba Specialist Hospital and later referred to Federal Medical Centre Asaba, where he died while receiving treatment.”

According to Edafe, the command was not oblivious to the fact that there were complaints emanating from social media and the brother of the deceased alleging that the police tortured him while he was in custody.

British monarch King Charles is set to premiere a new radio show on Apple Music titled ‘The King’s Music Room,’ in addition to his role as ruler of the United Kingdom.

As announced on Thursday, recorded in his office at Buckingham Palace, the show will showcase Charles’ favourite artists, from “1930s crooners to Afrobeats stars as well as disco divas and reggae icons,” according to a description.

In a trailer released on Thursday via X (formerly Twitter), King Charles introduced the show while seated behind his desk.

“Throughout my life, music has meant a great deal to me,” he said.

“It has that remarkable ability to bring happy memories, comfort us in times of sadness and take us to distant places. But perhaps, above all, it can lift our spirits to such a degree, and all the more so when it brings us together in celebration.

“In other words, it brings us joy,” the king continues. “This is what I particularly wanted to share with you: songs which have brought me joy. This seemed such an interesting and innovative way to celebrate this year’s Commonwealth Day.”

A statement added that Charles’ show would be “shaped by his extraordinary experiences from around the world” and that the monarch would share personal stories about the artists he features.

Bob Marley, Kylie Minogue, Grace Jones, Davido and RAYE are just a few of the musicians he’ll highlight.

“Human curation has always been a key pillar of our unique editorial approach,” said Rachel Newman, Apple Music’s global head of content and editorial, in a statement.

“Apple Music Radio is where culture is happening worldwide, and we are honoured that King Charles III chose to share his personal playlist with us, and with music fans around the world.”

The King’s Music Room will premiere on Apple Music 1 and Apple Music Hits at 6 a.m. GMT on Monday, March 10 with additional broadcasts throughout the day and Tuesday, March 11, 2025.

Nigerian singer Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, has won the Best African Music Performance category at the 67th Grammy Awards.

She secured the award with her song Love Me JeJe, beating Tomorrow by Yemi Alade, MMS by Asake featuring Wizkid, Sensational by Chris Brown featuring Davido and Lojay, and Higher by Burna Boy.

This marks Tems’ second Grammy win.

South Africa’s Tyla won the award for her hit Water in 2024 in the category’s first edition.

Tems received three nominations at this year’s Grammys, bringing her career total to eight. She was also nominated for Best Global Music Album (Born in the Wild) and Best R&B Song (Burning).

The 67th Grammy Awards took place at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles on Sunday.

Nigerian singer and songwriter, Adekunle Gold, has joined Bobo Omotayo and award-winning filmmaker, Abba Makama, as co-producer for the upcoming music documentary ‘The Odyssey’.

Currently in production, ‘The Odyssey’ chronicles the history, evolution of Yoruba music, and its various subculture like Were, Sakara, Apala, Juju, Afro Juju, Fuji, among others, to the present, whilst highlighting its significant and impact to Afrobeats.

The documentary will feature sounds, images and interview segments with Nigeria’s music legends, record label owners, chart-topping artistes, producers, and music journalists both past and present.

Adekunle Gold brings to the project his background of highlife, folk storytelling; his capacity to infuse Afropop with Afrobeats, Fuji, Juju, R&B and Amapiano and his networks from collaborations with diverse African and International artistes to play.

Enthused by the artiste’s involvement, Makama (Green White Green 2016, The Last Okoroshi 2019) said, “Working with these producers, each with their own backgrounds and perspectives has enlivened the creative process. We’ve already captured some incredibly fascinating interviews, and Adekunle Gold’s involvement adds a new dynamic layer to the story.”

“Our goal from the start has been to make a documentary that gives justice to Yoruba music by showcasing its essence. Our dedication to genuine and diverse storytelling is strengthened by Adekunle Gold’s addition to our team,” said Omotayo.

Additionally, The White House Production team is also open to innovative collaborations on the documentary, in the manner of photographer Andrew Esiebo – who as part of the crew captures unique and intimate moments with the documentary’s subjects both in private and onstage settings.

Esiebo’s photographs on the documentary will be exhibited in same time as The Odyssey’s premiere, on a later to be announced date, to offer audiences a visual auditory experience that honours the essence of Yoruba music.

Nigerian comedian, Bright Okpocha, popularly known as Basketmouth, has revealed that he will be concentrating fully on music and filmmaking this year.

He said he became a comedian by “fluke”.

He explained that he was initially chasing a carer in music but turned to comedy when he saw that it wasn’t working.

Speaking in a recent interview with Pulse, Basketmouth said, “I’m going to take music more seriously in 2025. I want to create EPs because there are some artists I want to work with.

“I want to go into music and movies full-time. To be honest, movies are my first choice. I prioritise movies over comedy. It has always been like that it’s just that I haven’t made the movie yet.

“I started with music but I saw that it wasn’t going to work. I have always been funny since primary school but music was just a talent I felt I could use as a plaything. Rap was my thing but after a while, I realised that it wasn’t going the way I want. Then I tried comedy, it was even by fluke. I was like, ‘this one is working. It must be the one.’

“When I entered comedy, the beginning was turbulent but immediately I hacked it, my career skyrocketed.”
