The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) have started uploading the names and particulars of their governorship and state Houses of Assembly candidates for the 2027 general elections on the nomination portal of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The opposition PDP had on Saturday commenced the exercise, the PDP National Organising Secretary, Umar Bature, said. A senior APC official also said the ruling party had also started submitting the details of candidates cleared by its primary election appeal panel and National Working Committee (NWC).

Speaking on the exercise, Bature said there had not been any technical problem in the PDP since the process began.

“The Peoples Democratic Party on Saturday began uploading information of its governorship and state Houses of Assembly candidates to the INEC nomination portal.

“The exercise has been going well, no technical issues and we are confident the upload process will be completed well ahead of the deadline,” he said.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had set aside July 18 to August 8, 2026 for the submission of nomination forms by governorship and state Houses of Assembly candidates, from 9am to 6pm.

Political parties earlier submitted nomination lists for their presidential and National Assembly candidates from June 27 to July 11.

The exercise was based on the presentation of the Forms EC9 and EC9A to EC9E as contained in Section 29(1) of the Electoral Act, 2026.

A party chieftain who spoke to The PUNCH on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak to the media said the party was giving priority to serving governors seeking re-election.

“The upload process started yesterday and I can confirm that the party prioritised those 16 governors seeking re-election,” said the official.

The APC source added that only candidates whose nominations survived petitions before the primary election appeal committee and got the approval of the NWC would be uploaded.

“There could be some minor changes in the original list of candidates as the primary election appeal committee had looked into some petitions and submitted its recommendations to the National Working Committee,” the source said.

So, only the candidates that went through the appeal committee review and got clearance from NWC were uploaded to INEC portal.

“We are confident that exercise will be completed before deadline.”

Among the incumbent governors, the APC list will likely include Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom, Hyacinth Alia of Benue, Uba Sani of Kaduna, Abba Yusuf of Kano, Dikko Radda of Katsina and Nasir Idris of Kebbi.

Others are Umaru Bago of Niger, Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau, Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto, Agbu Kefas of Taraba and Dauda Lawal of Zamfara.

First-time flagbearers like the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Obafemi Hamzat; Senator Solomon Adeola in Ogun; Kingsley Chinda in Rivers; and Eric Opah in Abia are also expected to make the party’s governorship list.

Our source further said the party has also announced the names of Mohammed Abubakar (Bauchi), Mustapha Gubio (Borno), Jamilu Gwamna (Gombe), Ahmed Wadada (Nasarawa) and Baba Malam Wali (Yobe).

He said that APC had constituted a committee to be headed by Jibrin Bancir, the Principal Private Secretary to the party’s national chairman to coordinate the collection and transmission of documents needed for the exercise.

“The committee obtains the documents from state chairmen, cross checks the details, ensures that all the requirements are met and forwards same to the ICT department for uploading.

“The arrangement is to make the process seamless, efficient and timely,” the source added.

The INEC timetable stipulates that the personal particulars of candidates for the presidency and the National Assembly will be published on August 8.

The details of the governorship and state Houses of Assembly candidates are scheduled for display on August 29.

Political parties have until 22 August to withdraw or substitute candidates for president and the National Assembly while those for governorships and state assemblies must be withdrawn or substituted by 19 September.

A total of 28 governorship candidates and 993 candidates for state Houses of Assembly are expected to be fielded by the PDP, APC and other political parties across the country.

Anambra, Bayelsa, Edo, Ekiti, Imo, Kogi, Ondo and Osun states will not hold governorship elections as their elections are held outside the general election cycle.

Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has warned that if nothing is done urgently, Nigerians may be banned from the rest of the world in the near future.

Sani issued this warning in a post via his official X handle on Saturday, in response to the deportation of Nigerians by the Canadian government.

Reacting, the former lawmaker said: “Canada has been a second home to thousands of Nigerians who live, study, or work there. It’s the most liberal country when it comes to immigration and accommodating Nigerians.
“The recent deportations of Nigerians from Canada are a wake-up call. Our unscrupulous citizens, involved in crime and abusing the benevolence and generosity of the Canadian people, are not helpful to our country’s image.

“We either tackle the few among us, or we may wake up one day banned by the rest of the world.”

Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, says President Donald Trump of the United States invaded Venezuela and captured its President without the approval of the Congress.

Sani made this statement in a post on his verified X handle on Saturday.

Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani, marked his 55th birthday by donating food items and cash to orphans and distressed patients across Kaduna and Zaria, in an outreach organised through the Uba Sani Foundation.

The governor, who turned 55 on Wednesday, December 31, celebrated the milestone by reaching out to vulnerable groups, including children in orphanage homes and patients receiving treatment in public hospitals.
According to the organisers, the foundation visited seven orphanages and eight major public health facilities to commemorate the occasion.

During the visits, the Executive Director of the foundation, Mallam Ibrahim Dan-Halilu, presented food items worth millions of naira to the orphanages.
The items included “50kg bags of rice, spaghetti, cooking oil, seasoning cubes, pomade, and soap,” as well as sanitary pads and blankets to protect the children from the Harmattan cold.

Orphanage homes that benefitted from the gesture included Umm Aytam Orphanage and Women Home in Unguwan Dosa, Al-Ihsan Orphanage in Nassarawa, Adonai Children and Widows Home in Kakuri, and Naphtali Orphanage in Gonin Gora, among others.
The foundation also extended support to patients at health facilities such as Barau Dikko Teaching Hospital, Yusuf Dantsoho General Hospital in Tudun Wada, Gwamna Awan General Hospital in Makera-Kakuri, General Hospital Kawo, and Hajiya Gambo Sawaba General Hospital in Kofar Gayan, Zaria.
Cash donations were given to more than 200 patients to help them purchase prescribed drugs and pay for laboratory tests.

Explaining the motivation behind the outreach, Dan-Halilu said “the purpose of the visits to the two special places was to use the occasion of the Governor’s birthday to remember the less privileged in our midst and reach out to assist them so that they can enter the New Year in high spirit.”
He also urged other wealthy individuals to support the vulnerable, calling on them “to emulate the kind gesture of the governor who has been assisting the needy long before he became the governor.”
Beneficiaries of the donations expressed gratitude, offering prayers for the governor’s long life, good health and continued service to the less privileged.

Founded in 2018, the Uba Sani Foundation focuses on health, education and empowerment. It has awarded scholarships to over 2,000 indigent students, trained more than 5,000 women and youths in vocational skills, and provided medical support to over 10,000 people, including surgical interventions.

Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, on Tuesday reacted to the renewed face-off between the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike and Governor Sim Fubara of Rivers State.

Sani said the renewed face-off between Wike and Fubara has turned into a Tom and Jerry series.
Posting on X, the former lawmaker wrote: “Wike Fubara issue has turned into a Tom and Jerry series.”

Wike had warned that sudden support of President Bola Tinubu by singing on “your mandate we shall stand” won’t guarantee a ticket in 2027.
He made the remark while responding to a comment by Fubara that the Minister was not direct in his support for Tinubu.

But, Wike said a lot of things would be taken into consideration before he supports Fubara’s reelection bid in 2027.
The minister explained that Fubara must show that he is a trusted man who can effectively work with the state’s legislators.

Former Kaduna Central senator, Shehu Sani, has said anyone who opposes the United States’ airstrikes on terrorist groups in Nigeria should be sent to the Sambisa forest.

Sani made this statement in a post on his verified X handle on Monday.
He was reacting to the Christmas Day airstrikes on the enclaves of terrorists in the North-West region of the country.

“Those who are opposed to striking those terrorist groups should be assembled and transported to the hinterlands of Zamfara and Sokoto.
“Those kinds of people should even be sent to the Sambisa forest so that they can preach or talk or negotiate with the terrorists so that they will stop murdering and kidnapping our people.

“When one is opposed to one thing he should be able to do another,” the former lawmaker said.

Kaduna State Government regularly involves its citizens in budget preparation and review, as part of its commitment to Open Government Partnership and Governor Uba Sani’s campaign promise, the Commissioner of Planning and Budget, Alhaji Muktar Ahmed has said.

He reiterated this at a stakeholders engagement on the Overview Of The Kaduna State Budget Implementation Report (Quarter 1-2) 2025.
He recalled that Community Engagement was one of the components of the Governor Uba Sani’s campaign manifesto, adding that ‘’His Excellency has been conducting Town Hall meetings to get the inputs of the public during budget preparation.’’

Alhaji Muktar further said that Kaduna was one of the first sub nationals to sign the Open Government Partnership, which entails citizens’ participation in budget circles.
The Commissioner pointed out that ‘’this stakeholders engagement is in fulfilment of both the Governor’s campaign promise and in compliance with Open Government Partnership.’’
According to him, this edition of stakeholders engagement is unique because it is the first time that children were invited ‘’because they also have a voice and deserve to know how their money is being spent.’’

The Commissioner disclosed that ‘’as at the end of the second quarter of 2025, Kaduna State recorded an actual Total Revenue of N91,232,312,135.21, while Year-to-Date (YTD) Total Expenditure stood at N89,202,307,325.45.
‘’These figures contributed to the cumulative Half-Year budget performance of N340,296,244,691.21 for revenue and N208,760,832,569.21 for expenditure, representing 43.1% and 26.4% performance against the 2025 Original Budget, respectively,’’ he added.
Alhaji Muktar also presented highlights of the draft 2026-2028 Medium Term Expenditure Framework of Kaduna State, concluding that ‘’the period will demand reinforced investments in climate-resilient infrastructure, disaster risk management and ecosystem restoration, alongside accelerated mitigation actions.’’

In his welcome remarks, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Planning and Budget, Alhaji Muktar Abdullahi noted that the inputs of stakeholders are vital to the preparation of budget estimates.
Civil Society Organisations, women groups and the physically challenged, including the academia and professional bodies, as well as students and the media attended the stakeholders engagement.
