LABOUR PARTY SCREENS BENUE ASSEMBLY ASPIRANTS IN MAKURDI

The Benue State chapter of the Labour Party on Wednesday conducted the screening exercise for aspirants seeking to contest for seats in the Benue State House of Assembly under the platform of the party ahead of the forthcoming elections.
The screening exercise, which took place at Balcony Hotel, was presided over by the State Chairman of the party, Hon. William Okefie Ochonu, in line with the guidelines of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the constitution of the party.
The exercise recorded a large turnout of aspirants from different state constituencies across Benue State, as party officials and members of the electoral committee supervised the screening process.
Addressing the aspirants before the commencement of the exercise, Hon. William Okefie Ochonu explained the procedures for filling the necessary forms and urged all aspirants to comply strictly with the requirements of the party and the electoral laws.
The state chairman assured the aspirants of the readiness of his office to provide a level playing ground for all qualified persons seeking to contest under the platform of the party. He further stated that every aspirant who complies with the party’s constitution and guidelines would be duly cleared.
The aspirants expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the screening exercise and were seen jubilating after undergoing the process established by the party in accordance with the electoral laws.
Also present at the event were members of the state electoral committee and other party officials working closely with the state chairman to ensure the success of the exercise.
Aspirants screened during the exercise held on May 20, 2026 include Comrade Nathaniel Ogaragbo, an aspirant for Ado State Constituency; Hon. Adakole Peter Okewu, an aspirant for Ogbadibo State Constituency; Hon. Dominic Agbo aka Domex, an aspirant for Okpokwu State Constituency; Hon. Ikpa Isaac Lawrence, an aspirant for Otukpo/Akpa State Constituency; Hon. Abul Baba, an aspirant for Agatu State Constituency; Hon. Abeen Francis, an aspirant for Makurdi South East Constituency; Hon. Moses Okopi Agbo, an aspirant for Ohimini State Constituency; and Hon. Agida Clement Ajiga (A&G), an aspirant for Oju I State Constituency.
Others are Hon. David Agada, an aspirant for Obi State Constituency; Hon. Kelvin Asange, an aspirant for Makurdi South West State Constituency; Hon. Igwe Peter Ochi, an aspirant for Oju II Uwokwu State Constituency; Hon. Lawrence Utsaha, an aspirant for Guma I State Constituency; Hon. Abraham Ngulunga, an aspirant for Gboko West State Constituency; Hon. David Ibaishwa, an aspirant for Katsina-Ala West State Constituency; Hon. Dyako Terhide, an aspirant for Shangev-Tiev State Constituency; and Hon. Agah Titus, an aspirant for Logo State Constituency.
Also screened were Hon. Apav Terhemem, an aspirant for Tombu State Constituency; Hon. Odayiko Ikape Emmanuel, an aspirant for Oju State Constituency; Hon. Ikyura Terna Francis, an aspirant for Gboko East State Constituency; Hon. Akaa Tertsegha Stephen, an aspirant for Nyamatsor State Constituency; Hon. Hwande Vitalis Viashima, an aspirant for Gwer-East State Constituency; Hon. Kondom Francis Ivo, an aspirant for Katsina-Ala East State Constituency; Hon. Jimmy Ogoh Nart, an aspirant for Adoka/Ugboju State Constituency; and Hon. Torough Charles Vaseer, an aspirant for Tarka State Constituency.
Meanwhile, Hon. Ternenge Dooshima Charity, an aspirant for Tiev State Constituency; Msugh Tyotsumeh, an aspirant for Konshisha State Constituency; Hon. Union demands tougher screening as Lagos e-hailing driver robs passenger

The Lagos State Council of the Amalgamated Union of App-Based Transporters of Nigeria has called for stricter profiling of e-hailing drivers after a female passenger, Pascaline Akusionwu, was stabbed by her driver in the Sangotedo area of the state.

Akusionwu who worked in a mall booked a ride on Saturday, February 23, after the close of work at about 2 am.

During the journey to her destination, the driver took a detour from the intended route, stopped midway and robbed her of her valuables.

The chairman of the union, Azeez Jaiyesimi, who spoke to our correspondent on Monday, said the victim was stabbed in the ear and on her thigh in the process adding that she had since been receiving treatment after the incident.

In a video sent to our correspondent, the injuries of the victim were being treated by medical personnel at an undisclosed hospital.

Meanwhile, Jaiyesimi said the union had since taken swift action, engaging with key authorities, including the Department of State Services, the police, and the Lagos State Government, to ensure a thorough investigation and justice for the victim.

According to him, the union had formally reported the matter to the app company, urging it to enforce stricter background checks on drivers before onboarding them.

“AUATON has taken significant steps in response to the recent robbery and stabbing incident involving Akusionwu Ogechukwu Pascaline. The union has moved swiftly to address the matter, collaborating with key stakeholders to ensure justice and enhance safety within the app-based transport sector. Also, in light of the severity of the attack, AUATON has taken proactive measures to support the victim and to hold the perpetrator accountable.

“After the incident, the union immediately engaged with the Department of State Services, the police, and the Lagos State Government to escalate the matter and facilitate a thorough investigation.”

“We also visited the victim personally to offer support and reassurance during this difficult time. AUATON has formally reported the incident to the company and urged it to take concrete steps to prevent similar occurrences through background checks on drivers before allowing them to operate on app-based platforms.”

Jaiyesimi added that AUATON maintained a comprehensive database of drivers’ profiles, which could be utilised to enhance safety and accountability within the app-based transport sector.

He further called for enhanced verification processes for drivers and passengers, stressing that proper profiling is crucial to preventing similar attacks.

“We recommended that app companies collaborate with the union to validate driver credentials and background information as part of the registration process. Furthermore, the union has pledged to work closely with all stakeholders, including the government, security agencies, and app-based transport companies, to implement improved security measures and safeguard the interests of both drivers and riders,” he added.

Anambra Guber Race: APC Starts Screening Aspirants

In anticipation of the party’s primary election in Anambra State, the ruling All Progressives Congress has declared the start of its screening process for candidates seeking the governorship.

According to information obtained, the exercise will begin at the APC National Secretariat in Abuja today, Friday, March 7.
The party’s media department said in a statement that the screening will take place over two days, ending on Saturday, March 8.

Punch claims that by selling nomination and expression of interest forms, which cost ₦50 million each, the party made ₦350 million. Tuesday, February 25th, was the last day to purchase and submit forms.

There are seven candidates in the race.
Seven candidates are qualified to participate in the screening process after successfully completing and submitting their forms.

Among them are Edozie Madu, Johnbosco Onunkwo, Valentine Ozigbo, Chukwuma Umeoji, Paul Chukwuma, Nicholas Ukachukwu, and Prof. Obiora Okonkwo.

According to the updated activity plan, Chukwuma, Okonkwo, and Ukachukwu will be screened today, and the other four—Umeoji, Ozigbo, Onunkwo, and Madu—will be screened on Saturday.

The statement stated that the seven APC candidates for governor of Anambra State will be screened between Friday, March 7, 2025, and Saturday, March 8, 2025, at the APC National Secretariat’s NWC Hall, located at 40 Blantyre Street in Wuse II, Abuja.

Sir Paul Chukwuma on Friday from 4.30 to 5.00 p.m., Prof. Obiora Okonkwo from 5.05 to 5.35 p.m., and Nicholas Ukachukwu from 5.40 to 6.10 p.m. are the candidates who would appear before the screening panel.

Johnbosco Onunkwo (11.35 am–12.05 pm), Valentine Ozigbo (10.35 am–11.05 am), Edozie Madu (12.35 am–1.05 pm), and Chukwuma Umeoji (10.00 am–10.30 am) will take turns attending the screening on Saturday.
