An alleged assault on students by soldiers from the Army Depot in Osogbo has been officially reported by Osun State University.
The report came after allegations that soldiers who had just passed out from the Nigerian Army Depot in Osogbo had broken into many of the institution’s hostels and attacked students on Monday night.
Prof. Clement Adebooye, the vice-chancellor of the institution, revealed on Tuesday that the issue had been brought to the military authorities after visiting a few of the impacted hostels to meet with students and evaluate the situation.
The Army Depot’s close proximity to the university has long been seen as an extra security measure for the school community, according to Adebooye, who expressed the institution’s serious worry over the occurrence.
“The depot’s management has received our report. The vice-chancellor stated, “It is unfortunate that the Army Depot, which is near the campus and we believed would provide us with security cover, could eventually release men who will subject our students to this kind of horrific experience.”
The institution stated that while investigations into the incident were ongoing, preliminary results indicated that over 20 students had been identified as victims of the alleged attack.
According to complaints from impacted students, soldiers attacked both male and female students during the operation and seized over sixty cell phones and other electronic items, according to Ademola Adesoji, the institution’s public relations officer.
Some female students said that the soldiers had undressed them. Additionally, they claimed that they had indecently touched them. Some male students were also assaulted,” Adesoji said.
He also revealed that, although one kid had been released by Tuesday morning, two students needed hospital treatment following the event.
According to Adesoji, the university administration is still in talks with the Nigerian Army regarding the accusations, but three of the suspected offenders have been identified and brought to the campus.
The institution also received allegations stating that a female student was raped during the incident.
Adesoji, however, stated that since no purported victim had been found, the accusation had not been confirmed.
He stated, “We can’t confirm the alleged rape yet,” and that the organization will keep looking into any cases that were reported.
According to reports, students were attacked by soldiers from the Depot Nigerian Army, Osogbo, who allegedly broke into the residence halls. Additionally, it was reported that they had stolen more than sixty student cell phones and other electronic devices.
According to reports, some female students from the batch that had their passing-out parade last Saturday were stripped naked and forced to dance unclad by the marauding military.
