Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has been in detention for 200 days following his arrest over alleged financial misconduct and another case involving the alleged unlawful interception of telephone communications of the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu.
The detention of El-Rufai has continued to generate legal and political controversy as his family and political allies have questioned the length and conditions of his detention, while anti-corruption agencies prosecuting him contend that the former governor is being investigated and tried in accordance with the law.
The Start of the Detention
The current legal troubles of the former governor stem from investigations that followed the 2024 report of the Kaduna State House of Assembly on the finances of his administration from 2015 to 2023.
The Assembly had alleged that about ₦423bn was mismanaged under El-Rufai and recommended that relevant anti-corruption agencies investigate the former governor and some officials who served with him.
They included abuse of office, diversion of public funds, irregularities in the award of contracts, money laundering and questionable borrowing.
It was against that backdrop that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) invited El-Rufai to appear for questioning. He accepted the invitation on February 16, 2026 and was later arrested at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
The EFCC said little publicly about the interrogation at the time but reports indicated the former governor was being questioned over alleged financial improprieties connected to his eight-year administration in Kaduna State.
Security operatives had reportedly attempted to apprehend him at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, upon his return from Cairo, Egypt, prior to his appearance at the EFCC.

El-Rufai later said his arrest was ordered by National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu. He added that he learned of the alleged order after a phone call involving the NSA was intercepted.
The Department of State Services (DSS) later filed a separate criminal case against him for alleged illegal interception of Ribadu’s telephone communications.
Transfer To ICPC Custody
El-Rufai was later moved to Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offenses Commission (ICPC) after spending about two days in EFCC custody.
He was subsequently charged by the ICPC over allegations during his time as governor of Kaduna.
Among other things, the commission said the former governor was accused of receiving severance payments far exceeding what he was legally entitled to and receiving dollar deposits allegedly connected with the proceeds of unlawful activities.
In April, the ICPC said it filed a 10-count charge against El-Rufai and Joel Adoga at the Federal High Court in Kaduna. The allegations were about conversion and possession of proceeds of corruption and money laundering, the commission said.
El-Rufai pled not guilty to the charges. He has always denied any wrongdoing and said the prosecution was politically motivated.
A separate case of nine counts was also filed at the Kaduna State High Court bordering on alleged abuse of office, fraud, conferment of undue advantage, irregular public contracts and unlawful handling of public funds.
Bail Battles and Ongoing Detention
The former governor’s continued detention has been closely tied to bail conditions set by the courts.
In one of the cases, the Federal High Court, Kaduna, admitted him to bail on conditions that include a ₦200m bond and two sureties in like sum. One of the sureties would be a resident of Kaduna State with property worth ₦200m and a verified Certificate of Occupancy, while the other would be a respected traditional ruler.
Other conditions included surrendering his international passport and restrictions on his movement.
In another case in Abuja involving allegations of phone interception, the court also imposed strict bail conditions. His lawyers later complained that some of the requirements were hard to meet.
In June, the Federal High Court in Abuja dismissed an application to review the bail conditions after the DSS closed its case. The matter was postponed to the 22nd of September 2026 for the adoption of the defence’s no case submission.
In this way the legal processes have continued and El-Rufai has remained in custody.
Short Leave for Mother’s Funeral
His detention was briefly interrupted in March after the death of his mother, Hajiya Umma El-Rufai, in Cairo.
The ICPC had granted him temporary release on compassionate grounds to enable him to attend the funeral rites. He was later taken back into custody and he appeared in court in Kaduna.
Family Concerns Over Health
Another major feature of the detention has been concerns over El-Rufai’s health.
In June, a family member told Daily Trust that a doctor at the National Hospital, Abuja, had expressed fears that the former governor might be suffering from prostate cancer.
A relative said El-Rufai’s health had deteriorated and that the family was concerned about him getting adequate medical attention.
But the family confessed at the time that the ICPC had been taking him to hospital and letting relatives visit him with food.
There were also concerns raised about an eye condition.
El-Rufai’s media aide, Muyiwa Adekeye, had said in June that the ex-governor had swollen, reddish and itchy eyes during his time in custody, and that calls for medical attention were not properly responded to.
The health controversy escalated in July when the ICPC arrested El-Rufai’s personal physician, Professor Bello Abubakar, following a medical visit to the former governor.
ICPC Rejects Medical-care Claims
The ICPC has rejected claims that it deliberately deprived El-Rufai of medical treatment.
On July 7, the commission said it had arranged a court-approved medical visit to the private wing of the National Hospital in Abuja. The ICPC said its officers stayed outside the consultation room to respect El-Rufai’s privacy as he was examined by an oncologist.
But the commission later complained that the medical visit was used for purposes other than the one for which it was authorized. Photographs showed El-Rufai meeting political associates during the period set aside for medical consultation, it said.
The ICPC said the former governor violated the terms and conditions attached to the medical visit. The ICPC also announced the arrest of Professor Abubakar for allegedly giving false statements. El-Rufai’s camp and political allies rejected the commission’s account.
“The ICPC has always maintained that it has met its obligations regarding the welfare and rights of persons in its custody.
Legal action for family access renewed
Controversy over the El-Rufai detention dragged on into August.
The ex-governor instituted a fresh suit for fundamental rights against the ICPC for ₦10bn, alleging that the commission has denied him access to members of his family.
The suit filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja alleged that his wife and son were denied the chance to visit him and that access to food, medication and other necessities had also been affected.
The family has said the restrictions violate El-Rufai’s constitutional rights and have expressed concerns about access to his personal physicians.
But the ICPC has said access to detainees is subject to its security regulations and that authorized family members, lawyers and medical personnel are allowed to visit detainees within stipulated hours.
What’s Next
Court yet to resolve El-Rufai’s 200-day detention
The ex-governor is standing trial on several criminal charges in Kaduna and Abuja, all of which he has denied. In some of the cases, the courts have released him on bail but imposed conditions that his lawyers have said are difficult to meet.
His phone interception case in Abuja is scheduled to come up on September 22 for the adoption of his no-case submission, while the separate corruption-related proceedings in Kaduna continue.
El-Rufai is currently being detained as the courts deliberate on his cases.
