Veteran Nollywood actor and film executive, Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, has died at the age of 84.
The death of the highly respected actor was announced by his family on Wednesday, September 16, 2026.
His wife and fellow veteran actress, Joke Silva, and their son, Olusoji Jacobs, shared the announcement on social media as the family mourned the loss of the Nigerian film icon.
In a statement, the family referred to the late actor as “The Lion of Lufodo” and appealed to bloggers, social media influencers and the public to respect their privacy during the mourning period.
Born on July 11, 1942, Olu Jacobs built a distinguished career spanning theatre, television and film. He trained at the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London before appearing in British television productions and international films.

He later became one of the most recognisable and respected figures in Nigeria’s entertainment industry, earning acclaim for his performances across several decades.
Throughout his career, Jacobs received numerous honours for his contribution to the arts. Among them was the Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR), which he received in 2011.
He was also honoured with the Industry Merit Award at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards in recognition of his contribution to the African film industry.
Olu Jacobs is survived by his wife, Joke Silva, his children and grandchildren.
His death marks the loss of one of the most influential figures in Nigerian theatre and cinema.
