The national leadership of the Accord Party has condemned the freezing of the Osun State Government’s accounts by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) ahead of the August 15 governorship election in the state.
The party said the action was “injustice, illegality, impunity and recklessness” and would not be tolerated.
Accord Party National Chairman, Maxwell Mgbudem, in a statement yesterday, accused the EFCC of being part of a grand conspiracy to take over Osun State for the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) by using the police and federal agencies.
“The unconstitutional action of the EFCC will be challenged in court as the temple of justice and last hope of all aggrieved citizens,” Mgbudem said.
The anti-graft agency, in its haste to cripple the state, could not even get a court order to freeze government accounts knowing it would not get it.
‘It is obvious that EFCC is working a script in collusion with the police in the state to cripple and frustrate government activities to create room for the opposition APC. The timing of this grand plot to destabilise the state in the run-up to the gubernatorial poll is apparent.
Accord had earlier raised the alarm of the plot to use federal might to subdue Osun residents and make the state ungovernable. One of them is the EFCC reprehensible action days to the crucial election. Like other plots against the good people of Osun State, it will fail.
Accord is confident that the rule of law will once more prevail as obtainable in the infamous plot to de-register the party with four others.
“Reactionary forces will continue to face stiff resistance from Nigerians in their blatant attacks on the country’s hard earned democracy.
He urged President Bola Tinubu to ensure a free, fair, credible and peaceful governorship election in Osun State on 15 August 2026 by ensuring that security agencies, particularly the police, are neutral and impartial in their conduct before, during and after the poll.
As Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, President Tinubu is duty bound to protect the lives and property of the federation and ensure that security agencies do not breach their rules of engagement in this critical civic exercise.“Unfortunately, the political tension in Osun State is very high due to the glaring interference, harassment, intimidation, arrest and detention of Accord members and supporters across the state by the police as if Osun is at war.
“The police have become so partisan and desperate in supporting the opposition APC in the state that their impartiality is questionable. This is unpatriotic, unprofessional and unacceptable.
“Election should be the beauty of democratic governance and not a war front. The search of citizens for political participation does not need a rule of force.
“Nigerians will not allow any rigging of the Osun governorship election to impose an unpopular candidate on the people. Voters should be able to choose.
“The party will not sit back and watch its members being maltreated and killed for their political affiliation, often in the presence of security agents.
The aspirations of any politician is not worth the blood of fellow compatriots. This politics of bitterness and brigandage must cease forthwith.
“The president should checkmate the overzealous security agents, the EFCC and anti-democratic forces in Osun State and allow INEC to be independent to conduct the governorship election.
Accord demands the unconditional release of all its members and supporters arrested in Abuja, Osun and Nasarawa states in flagrant violation of their fundamental rights guaranteed by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 as amended. The right of citizens to choose their governor freely is sacred and must be respected by all.
Osun people will resist any attempt to rig or manipulate the governorship election. It is wise to learn from the past gubernatorial polls in the western region, shun political upheavals and tread the path of patriotism, dignity, integrity and professionalism in the conduct of the election.
“Osun people are peace loving and want to participate in the election without fear of police harassment and arrest. That’s why the party is calling on President Tinubu to allow free election. “It will be to his credit that the Osun governorship election is free, fair and acceptable,” he added.
He is still the people’s choice and will be re-elected to continue his transformative leadership,” he said.
