Afrobeats singer Fireboy DML has opened up about his early experiences in Lagos, revealing that some of the things he encountered after relocating to the city left him frightened.
The singer shared the details while speaking during a recent livestream, recalling his arrival in Lagos in 2016 as he pursued his ambition of building a career in music.
According to Fireboy, adjusting to life in the city was initially difficult because of the unusual and disturbing situations he encountered. He said that within his first two weeks in Surulere, he witnessed someone running mad, saw dead bodies and encountered people he identified as cultists.
He also admitted that the appearance and demeanour of some Lagos residents contributed to his initial fear.
“I was so scared the first time I came to Lagos in 2016, in Surulere. People’s eyes were so red, and they looked scary. In two weeks, I saw someone run mad, dead bodies and cultists. Now, I also look like those scary people,” he said.

Despite the frightening experiences, Fireboy said he did not abandon his dream. Instead, he gradually adapted to the city’s lifestyle and became accustomed to the environment.
Meanwhile, the singer has also recalled how a seemingly harmless Instagram post caused concern among his family members.
Speaking on the Afrobeats Podcast, Fireboy revealed that his family became worried after he shared a picture of himself holding a cigarette in his mouth on his Instagram Story.
He explained that the image was initially intended as part of his showbiz presentation and that he did not expect his family to react strongly.
However, members of his family reportedly expressed concern in their WhatsApp group after seeing the post. Fireboy said his mother became emotional and even cried over the image.
The singer said he had to reassure his family that the cigarette was part of an entertainment-related presentation and urged them not to panic.
However, he admitted that although he initially described the cigarette as part of the act, he eventually smoked it.
“I posted a snippet on my Instagram Story while holding a cigarette in my mouth, and my whole family started crashing out in the WhatsApp group. My mom was crying, and I had to explain to them that it was just showbiz. I later smoked it, sha; I can’t lie,” he said.
